There will be various aspects to the exhibition, which will be displayed throughout the Pier’s ground floor galleries. These will include archive material relating to the founding of Soulisquoy; a focus on founder members and former artists in residence; and folio projects that have been printed at Soulisquoy and prints from current members and supporters. Members Recollections
We are keen to hear your memories and stories about Soulisquoy and if you have photographs of any of our previous studio spaces at Hatston or the Picky Centre, workshops or exhibitions, we’d love to see them.
40 Years Print Commissions
We received three expressions of interest for the Members Open Call. Megumi Barrington, Magda Choluj and Laura Drever are now working towards making their prints. In addition, we are working with local artists Colin Kirkpatrick and Brandon Logan to produce a print edition from their work. All editions will all be launched at the Pier Arts Centre in February to coincide with the 40 Years exhibition.
Logo Competition
As part of our 40th anniversary celebration our logo competition is now complete. Designed by local art teacher Hannah Wylie, we are delighted with it! The competition attracted 20 entries, some on a similar theme, but the selection panel were particularly stuck with Hannah’s approach. You can see it above.
Soulisquoy at 40
For 40 years Soulisquoy has been dedicated to offering open access print facilities to professional artists, individuals and groups within Orkney from their studio in the centre of Stromness. Focusing on traditional forms of print the sunny studio has proudly offered creatives of all backgrounds the time and space to develop and explore their practices.
Operated and managed by a committed group of volunteers Soulisquoy provides a unique access point to the community of Orkney through a wide programme of courses, exhibitions and workshops. With their 40th anniversary fast approaching Soulisquoy hopes to not only maintain this spirit but also build upon it with a series of events and activities to be announced throughout 2022.
Officially founded on the 14th of April 1982 by a group of local artists and printmakers with the intention of helping artists to make print works sustainably within Orkney opposed to having to visit larger cities. The first site of this studio was the former wartime building Nº 16 within the Hatston Industrial Estate.
