FAQs

Can anyone become a member?

Yes, although we have an application and vetting process. All members, Full and Associate need to complete an induction course to learn how to studio operates and familiarise themselves with health and safety procedure. You will need some experience to work in the studio independently, so signing up for a class or two would be of benefit to build up confidence.

Do we get 24/7 access as Full members?

Yes. A booking system is in place that ensures that no more than three members are using the studio at any one time. A link to the booking sheet will be provided when Full Membership has been granted.

Can I use any of the machines if I become a member?

New members need to undertake a studio induction and demonstrate a certain level of printmaking competency before being able to access the presses independently. We provide workshops, classes and technical support sessions to ensure that studio users are safe and confident using the studio.

Can my friend come along to my session?

No. The studio can only be accessed by Full and Associate members who have received an induction. If you require a ‘second pair of hands’ see if another member can help you.

Please note that only registered guide dogs and assistance dogs are permitted in the studio.

What materials would I need to provide?

We encourage members to supply their own especially for screen-printing, where you need to supply both your own inks and screens. We have some inks available for relief and etching processes, but advise members to supply their own. Copper, scrim and lino is available to purchase. A number of consumables are available for example, ferric chloride for acrylic resist etching, vegetable oils for cleaning up etc.

Can I borrow any of the tools to take home?

No. The studio is well equipped with printmaking tools and equipment including burnishers, etching and dry point needles, high quality rollers, lino, woodcutting and wood engraving tools. These can be used within the studio, and for classes and workshops and we ask members not to take these home.

Can I buy papers at Soulisquoy?

Yes. We have good, but limited stock of printmaking papers available, including Somerset Satin, Arches 88 and BFK Rives as well as cartridge, blotters, tissue and display boards for collographs and a selections of other multi-purpose papers. Members are invoiced quarterly for materials.
