Weekend Workshops:

Introduction to Wood Engraving with Gillian Jones

Date: TBC 27&28 September

Time: 10am-4pm

Tutor: Gillian Jones

Class size: 6

Level: Beginner, some relief cutting experience would be of benefit.

Class Fee: £130 All materials provided.

The workshop will introduce the basic principles of wood engraving, the tools used and the printing process. You will create and print a block with your own design/image. Wood engravings are cut on the end grain of woods such as box and lemon and are distinct from woodcuts which use the side grain. Wood engraving produces very fine detail and is traditionally on a small scale.

NB Although this is an introduction suitable for beginners, it involves working at a small scale and in fine detail.

Gillian Jones is an accomplished painter and printmaker based in Cromarty, who specialises in wood engraving.  http://www.gillianjonesartist.co.uk/woodengraving.html

Collagraph is a perfect introduction to the intaglio and etching printing process. The two-day workshop will include preparing images suitable for the technique, transferring them to your plate and printing a small edition using our etching presses. Now retired, Mike was senior print technician at Peacock in Aberdeen. He continues to work with many of Scotland’s leading artists, most notably Frances Walker. He first visited Soulisquoy in 2007, and most recently in April this year.
